Meanwhile, Newcastle United have been linked with a January move for Italy international goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu.

AS Monaco and Premier League rivals Aston Villa are also believed to be in the hunt to sign the out-of-favour Paris Saint-Germain shot stopper in next month’s transfer window.

The 28-year-old, who has 15 international caps for his country, has kept two clean sheets in the two appearances he has made all season for the defending Ligue 1 champions.

And finally, Toon defender Daryl Janmaat and his team-mates were frustrated not to take all three points from last weekend’s home game against basement club Aston Villa.

However, McClaren’s side – who beat Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool – are three games unbeaten and keen to extend that run.

"It's still a good run," said Janmaat.

"Against Spurs we would have taken a point and against Villa a win, so if you turn them around then it looks better.

"Next Saturday we have a good opportunity to beat Everton and get another three points. (It is) a nice game to look forward to."
