Reports have today linked Newcastle United with a January move for Jonjo Shelvey.

The Swansea City midfielder has been linked with a move away from Swansea since former boss Garry Monk was axed.

And reports suggest Steve McClaren's Newcastle are leading the chase to sign him.

Meanwhile, McClaren has confirmed new signings ARE on the agenda with struggling Newcastle deep in relegation trouble after the 1-0 defeat to West Brom on Bank Holiday Monday.

McClaren said: "We’re working behind the scenes and, in the next few days, that will be on the agenda.

"That’s how we do our business, very privately."

And finally, McClaren has defended his struggling Newcastle United team after fans turned on his players at The Hawthorns.

McClaren's third-from-bottom side are two points adrift of safety in the Premier League after yesterday’s defeat to West Bromwich Albion.

Asked about ending the year in the bottom three, McClaren said: "I think the half-term report would say that we didn't start the season very well.

"We were very inconsistent, but I think we’ve ended the first half of the season with a bit of consistency."
