Boss Steve McClaren has remained tight-lipped on transfer activity this month but the big-money signing of Townsend is unlikely to be the last of the spending.

West Bromwich Albion forward Saido Berahino is next on the wanted list, with Newcastle desperate to add more firepower to their goal-shy forward line.

Meanwhile, McClaren has been handed a big injury boost ahead of the trip to Goodison Park to face Everton next week.
Steven Taylor – who wasn’t involved in last night’s Under-21 Premier League game against Derby County at Whitley Park – will play in a behind-closed-doors fixture this week to top up his fitness.
And McClaren also hopes to have defender Paul Dummett and midfielder Jack Colback – both out with hamstring problems – available for the Everton game on February 3.
