Newcastle United continue to splash the January cash after agreeing a £12million fee for Tottenham Hotspur winger Andros Townsend.

It has been a long drawn out pursuit but the deal looks set to finally be completed with the England international now expected to travel to Tyneside to discuss personal terms and undergo a medical.

Boss Steve McClaren has remained tight-lipped on transfer activity this month but the big-money signing of Townsend is unlikely to be the last of the spending.

West Bromwich Albion forward Saido Berahino is next on the wanted list, with Newcastle desperate to add more firepower to their goal-shy forward line.

It would take a bid in excess of £20million to persuade West Brom chairman Jeremy Peace to sanction an exit for Berahino.

Meanwhile, McClaren has been handed a big injury boost ahead of the trip to Goodison Park to face Everton next week.

Steven Taylor – who wasn’t involved in last night’s Under-21 Premier League game against Derby County at Whitley Park – will play in a behind-closed-doors fixture this week to top up his fitness.

And McClaren also hopes to have defender Paul Dummett and midfielder Jack Colback – both out with hamstring problems – available for the Everton game on February 3.
