According to Portuguese outlet O Jogo, United are one of three Premier League clubs to have asked about the Serie A central midfielder.

Leeds United and West Ham United are also said to be interested in the player who is said not to be part of Inter boss Antonio Conte’s future plans.

In 2018, Mario had a loan spell with the Hammers.

The 27-year-old is said to be available for a fee of around £13 million.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United have confirmed defenders Paul Dummett and Fabian Schar are back in training.

But they’ve also confirmed Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup third round tie at Morecambe is likely to come around too soon for the duo.

On the club website, the update reads: “Paul Dummett and Fabian Schär are now back in training, too, although Wednesday's game could come too soon for both players. Allan Saint-Maximin did not train on Monday after he injured his ankle in Sunday's defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion, while Jamal Lewis was absent after the incident which saw the Seagulls' Yves Bissouma shown a straight red card late in the game.”

United boss Steve Bruce is again likely to ring the changes to his side, with a trip to Newport County or Watford awaiting the winner of tomorrow’s clash.

Jacob Murphy, Dan Barlaser, Mark Gillespie, Emil Krafth and a number of other fringe players are set to be called up for first-team duty.
