Newcastle United rumours: Ex-Magpie in line for summer return, Toon plot raid for Championship star

While much of the focus will be on who Newcastle United can bring in this summer transfer window, there may well be some fascinating subplots with regards to potential exits.

The Magpies have a host of players on the books who could head out of the clubs in the coming weeks and months, and with funds seemingly tight on Tyneside, it may well be that offloading some assets is actively encouraged.

One player who has found himself on the periphery this term is Matty Longstaff.

The youngster hasn’t featured for the Toon Army since a busy festive period, and has previously had offers from elsewhere to his boyhood club.

But according to former West Ham striker Frank McAvennie, Steve Bruce has made the right choice by omitting him from his plans in recent months.

Speaking to Football Insider about the midfielder, the Scot said: “They were playing without him and getting results so Bruce has been proved right there.

“It’s not a popular thing to say but he’s been proved right. The young boy wants games and I have no problem with that.

“If you aren’t getting a game, go and play somewhere else. If he’s that desperate, he could drop down the leagues to find football.

“He’s English as well, he won’t just sit and take the money. He will want to go and play football wherever he can get it.”

The 21-year-old signed a new two-year contract in August last year after making 15 appearances during his breakthrough season – which included a winner at home to Manchester United on his debut.
