Newcastle United rumours: Toon emerge as favourites for PL defender, Bruce eyes raid for Euro 2020 starlet

Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka had an afternoon to forget at Euro 2020 on Wednesday.

The experienced stopper shipped five against Spain as his Slovakian side crashed out of the competition, and despite saving a penalty, his display will be remembered for an altogether more calamitous moment.

Partway through the first half, the Toon man looked to turn a routine looping ball over his own crossbar, but instead misjudged the flight and ended up parrying it straight into his own net.

Speaking after the incident, ITV’s punditry team were quick to criticise his error.

Host Mark Pougatch said: '"It's out of horror film from Martin Dubravka point of view."

Former England defender Ashley Cole agreed, replying: "Yeah it is. He's misjudged it.

"It's a poor ball from Sakta across his box, playing him blind and you think does Dubravka expect it to come back off the bar? He's gone with his palm and not his fist, the timing of the jump is all wrong - normally goalkeepers try and meet the ball at the highest point, he's let it come down, mistimed it and slapped it into his goal."

Ex-Manchester United man Gary Neville tried to get to the bottom of the bizarre mistake, adding: "I think because it's come down from such a distance it's probably more difficult to parry over the bar - maybe he has to go with his fist.

"It's an embarrassing one for him - he's not had a good half."
