The club, along with Chelsea, Everton and Aston Villa, have been watching the 18-year-old midfielder, according to L’Equipe.

Sarr, a senior Senegal international, made his debut for Metz late last year after signing a five-year deal at the Ligue 1 club. Sarr made 22 league appearances, and scored three goals, during his breakthrough season at the club, and has been tipped for a move to a Premier League club this summer.

Speaking to L’Equipe, Sarr said: “At Metz, our first objective is to keep the team in Ligue 1. But winning trophies with them is also part of my ambitions for next season. I want to have a better season, and, if possible, score more goals.”

Newcastle have previously recruited heavily from the French market, and had a £35million bid for Boubakary Soumare rejected by Lille in January last year.
