The midfielder, signed on a half-season loan from Arsenal on transfer deadline day, scored 16 minutes into his debut for the relegation-threatened club against the Saints.

But Bruce had been considering naming the 21-year-old, signed to add “something different” to his midfield options, as a substitute ahead of the Premier League game.

And Kevin Keegan has opened up on the future of Newcastle United amid legal moves to resurrect a takeover.

“You have to give people hope,” said Keegan. "It won’t go on forever. Someone, somewhere, will see the benefits of that great football club.
