The Magpies threw a huge spanner in the works for the Foxes hopes of a top four finish by racing into a four-goal lead, with a late fightback from the hosts unable to prevent Steve Bruce’s men from coming away with all three points.
The result means that the Toon Army are now 13th in the table, and more importantly, all but safe from relegation for another season.
Technically, Newcastle could still go down on goal difference, but it would take a freakish run of events for that to happen at this stage.
Still, manager Bruce is not taking any chances.
Speaking after Friday’s win, he said: “We’re a darn sight better off than a month ago. We’ve made huge strides, but we can’t take anything for granted.
“Until you get to the magic figure, (you’re not safe), but we’ve given ourselves a chance of getting past 44 points, which is what we got last year. We’re not safe. We’re almost there. Until it’s done, we have to get ready for the next challenge.”
He added: “Once the big players return, it makes a difference.
“We’ve struggled with injuries and Covid-19, and that’s been a major change.
“We were a threat. We were clinical, which helps. It was as good as we’ve played in the couple of years I’ve been here.”
