According to the Athletic, the Magpies were monitoring Everton frontman Dominic Calvert-Lewin, along with a host of other top flight clubs, but did not make the move, instead opting for £40million Brazilian flop Joelinton.

The 23-year-old Toffees’ striker scored 15 goals in 32 games last season, 10 of those coming under the stewardship of Italian Carlo Ancelotti.

Meanwhile, the Premier League has been suspended until at least the end of next month.

The league last week suspended its fixtures until April 4 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

And the Premier League has issued a joint statement with the EFL following a meeting today postponing games until “no earlier than April 30”.

The situation will be kept “under review” as the country prepares for a tighter lockdown.
