TeamTalk suggest that Crystal Palace midfielder James McCarthy is on the radar of the Magpies, with the 30-year-old set to see his contract at Selhurst Park this season.

The Irishman is reportedly willing to discuss a new deal with the Eagles, but has been told that no decisions will be made until Palace’s managerial situation is clearer.

That has alerted a number of clubs – with Newcastle, Celtic and Burnley all reportedly keen on a switch.

And McCarthy isn’t the only midfielder being eyed by Bruce, with The Sun claiming that Huddersfield Town’s Lewis O’Brien is also a target.

O’Brien has been the subject of interest from several Premier League sides in the past and Burnley were keen on a move in January.

The Championship side value the midfielder at around £4million.

Newcastle have also been linked with Southampton midfielder Mario Lemina.

Rafa Benitez linked with shock Premier League return at Tottenham Hotspur

Rafa Benitez is ‘open’ to talks with Tottenham Hotspur over their vacant managerial position – according to the Evening Standard.

The former Newcastle United and Liverpool boss has made no secret of his desire to return to the Premier League in the future, and could yet emerge as a shock contender for the Spurs job following Jose Mourinho’s dismissal.

Ajax manager Erik ten Hag was the favourite for the role, but signed a new contract with the Dutch side this week.

Scott Parker, Graham Potter and Ralf Rangnick has also been linked with the role.

Newcastle United loanee Freddie Woodman approaches major milestone

It’s been a successful season for Newcastle youngster Freddie Woodman while at loan at Swansea City – and he could hit a major landmark this weekend.

Woodman, who was linked with Arsenal in January, will claim the Championship Golden Glove if he keeps a clean sheet against Derby County.
