Bruno Guimaraes’ suspension and injury worries surrounding Joe Willock and Callum Wilson mean Howe has a couple of dilemmas on his hands when Jurgen Klopp’s side come to town.
Newcastle haven’t tasted defeat in the league since their defeat at Anfield back in August, but five draws in their last six league outings has slightly dampened spirits around St James’s Park.
Their game with Liverpool could become a season-defining one and comes just eight days before their Carabao Cup final clash with Manchester United - making it a huge few weeks ahead of Howe’s side.
Here, we take a look at the starting XI that the Newcastle United head coach could select for the visit of Liverpool on Saturday evening.

. GK: Nick Pope
Pope has conceded in his last two appearances, but he still has the league’s best defence in-front of him. He hasn’t conceded more than once in a game since the clash at Anfield back in August. Photo: Gareth Copley

. RB: Kieran Trippier

5. CB: Sven Botman
The Dutchman also didn’t feature against the Reds in August, but he will have to be on top-form to repel the threats of Liverpool’s flexible front three. Photo: Ian MacNicol

6. LB: Dan Burn
Mo Salah is the man Burn will be tasked with keeping quiet this weekend. The man from Blyth has been superb at the back this season and will need to be at his best on Saturday. Photo: Ian MacNicol

7. CM: Anthony Gordon
Gordon may not be playing in his natural winger role, but he showed against Bournemouth that he can adapt well to role in midfield. With Trippier and Almiron next to him, Gordon has plenty of protection that will allow him to drift forward if and when the opportunity arises. Photo: Ian MacNicol

8. CM: Sean Longstaff
Bruno Guimaraes’s absence means, once again, Longstaff will be tasked with anchoring the midfield. His run from deep to set up Almiron’s goal last weekend was the perfect example of what he can do when afforded the opportunity to attack. Photo: Dan Istitene
