Newcastle remain winless in the Premier League after their opening four games - despite a spirited display in the defeat to Arsenal.

Aleksandar Mitrovic saw red in a feisty encounter, with referee Andre Marriner at the centre of the controversy.

How did the Newcastle players get on? Richard Mennear gives his ratings:

Tim Krul: Made several saves second half to keep the score down. Goal was deflected in past him and couldn’t do much about it.....7

Daryl Janmaat: Always looking to press forward, defended well against lively Arsenal attack.......7

Chancel Mbemba: Defended well against Walcott, two crucial interventions first half. Went on an incredible 70-yard run second half, settled well....7

Fabricio Coloccini (C): Ball deflected in off him for goal, aside from that marshalled the defence well. The defence will be glad for a rest....7

Massadio Haidara: Impressed at left-back again. Had been highlighted as a problem area pre-season but coped well with Arsenal wide men....7

Vurnon Anita: Had work cut out against an Arsenal side, who pass the ball around for fun. Did okay. It was damage limitation after red card though....6

Jack Colback: Was among the small group of Newcastle players not to be booked, ran his socks off first half, pressing Arsenal midfield....7

Moussa Sissoko: Back in the side after groin strain, showed early promise but Mitrovic red card ruined the game for Newcastle. Struggled to have impact final third...6

Georginio Wijnaldum: Kept his composure first half when everyone else was losing theirs. Booked early into second half though. Newcastle struggled offensively...6.

Florian Thauvin: Tough full debut for Thauvin, pushed up front after Mitrovic red. Worked hard but set piece delivery poor....6

Aleksandar Mitrovic: Hot-headed striker needs to learn the error of his ways. Whether he is a target or not, he let his side down.....4

Subs:

Ayoze Perez: Replaced Anita with McClaren looking for more impetus up front. Showed some flashes...6

Siem de Jong: Came on as a very late sub....6

Papiss Cisse: Newcastle looked more of a threat with him on...6

Arsenal:

Petr Cech: 6

Hector Bellerin: 6

Gabriel: 7

Laurent Koscielny: 7

Nacho Monreal: 6

Francis Coquelin: 6

Santi Cazorla (C): 7

Aaron Ramsey: 6

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain: 7

Alexis Sanchez: 6

Theo Walcott: 5

Subs:

Mikel Arteta: 6

Olivier Giroud: 6

Referee: Andre Marriner (West Midlands): Missed a clear Arsenal penalty. Got the red card right but was too trigger-happy with cards. Set the wrong tone early on....4
