Mike Williamson is a major injury doubt for Newcastle United’s game against Liverpool on Sunday after picking up a hamstring strain in training.
The defender was recalled by the Magpies this week from his loan spell at Wolves, after Jamaal Lascelles tweaked a hamstring over the weekend.
But the Newcastle injury curse has struck again with Willaimson picking up a similar injury.
The veteran centre-half will go for a scan to determine the extent of the strain.
Head coach Steve McClaren said: “He has tweaked his hamstring in training and needs a scan. We will know more later.
“When it goes against you, it goes against you. This is when you have to show character.”
It means Newcastle skipper Fabricio Coloccini – under pressure of being dropped after a string of poor performances – looks like keeping his place for the visit of the rampant Reds.
Lascelles is definitely out of the Liverpool clash, as is Cheick Tiote.
McClaren added: “Including a couple of kids, we’ve got 18 players for Sunday. Williamson has tweaked his hamstring and will have a scan.”
