Christian Atsu’s season is over – after he went under the knife.
The Newcastle United winger has had an operation on his knee ahead of the final three games of the campaign.
Atsu, signed from Chelsea last summer, impressed in the early part of the season.
However, the 26-year-old – who has scored two Premier League goals this season – found his opportunities limited by the arrival of Kenedy in January.
“Atsu has had an operation on his knee to be sure that he will be fine for the next year,” said United manager Rafa Benitez.
“It wasn’t a big issue, but he had some discomfort, and we needed to fix the problem now to be sure that next year he’s fine.”

Benitez will also be without defender Ciaran Clark for tomorrow’s game against Watford at Vicarage Road.
“Clark has a little problem with his knee,” said Benitez.
“We think he will be fine for next week, hopefully. The others are fine.”
Benitez will make changes at Vicarage Road after back-to-back defeats to West Bromwich Albion and Everton.
“Our idea is to try to get three points in every game, but especially after two defeats we want to do well,” said Benitez.
“When you have achieved what you want to achieve, sometimes it’s more difficult, but we will make some changes to try to keep everybody on their toes.”
