Newcastle United are yet to return with an improved bid for Norwich City's Jacob Murphy.
The Championship club has turned down an £8million offer for the winger.
Norwich have slapped a £16million price tag on Murphy, but Newcastle will not pay anywhere near that figure.
And United are still considering their next move.
The club, which has signed Christian Atsu and Florian Lejeune so far this summer, could return with an improved £10million bid for the 22-year-old, who is said to be interested in a move to St James's Park.
Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez, keen to see more players through the door, is getting impatient.
A frustrated Benitez has acknowledged that this summer's inflated transfer market is "crazy".
But he also believes that United will have to pay the going rate for talent between now and the end of the window.
Newcastle kick off their pre-season campaign tomorrow night.
Benitez's side take on Heart of Midlothian at Tynecastle before heading to Ireland for a week-long training camp at Carlton House, Co Kildare.
