Rafa Benitez is hopeful that DeAndre Yedlin can ease the pain of Vurnon Anita's absence.
Anita will serve the second match of a three-game ban against Aston Villa this evening.
And Yedlin is on standby to make his first Championship start for Newcastle United, having played in Tuesday night's 2-0 EFL Cup win over Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Anita was dismissed in last weekend's league defeat to Wolves.
United manager Benitez said: "He will be a big miss, because he is a good player and he has a very good relationship with the rest of the team, but in terms of football, hopefully not.
"I like to train with all the players doing exactly the same things, more or less, so if you do set-pieces then everybody has to be involved and they will know what to do.
"If you tactical work, they will know what to do. Each player is different, but they know what is required of them, so hopefully we will not see a big difference in terms of what Anita was doing well."
Asked if Yedlin would start at Villa Park, Benitez added: "Yeah, he could well be. I think it's not difficult to guess.
"(Jesus) Gamez is still getting better but still he is not ready."
