Rob Benitez says Rob Elliot needs more competition at Newcastle United.
Benitez is looking to sign another goalkeeper in this summer's transfer market.
United's manager surprisingly left longstanding No 1 Tim Krul out of his squad for the club's week-long training camp in Ireland.
Benitez – who loaned out Matz Sels to Anderlecht last month – indicated that Krul was "available" for transfer earlier this week.
And he is also prepared to sell Karl Darlow, who outstanding for Newcastle in the Championship last season.
“The main thing for Rob Elliot is to be fit," said Benitez. "He’s training hard after playing the final three games of last season.
“He is a good goalkeeper, but I want him to compete.
“You can’t have players that think this is easy, because they are the only one in that position.
“Hopefully, we can bring in a new goalkeeper, and this competition will be good for the team.”
United missed out on goalkeeper Willy Caballero last month.
The 35-year-old joined Chelsea as a free agent after his Manchester City contract expired.
Benitez, meanwhile, also has Freddie Woodman at Newcastle, though the 20-year-old could be loaned out again for more first-team experience.
