Rafa Benitez had no sympathy for Jesus Gamez after he saw red in Newcastle United’s 4-0 win over Sporting Lokeren.

Gamez and Marko Miric were dismissed late in Saturday’s friendly at the Daknamstadion in Belgium.

In these kind of games, you have to have more control. For both players, I think it was a mistake.

The Newcastle defender reacted angrily to a challenge from Miric, and both players were shown red cards for raising their hands in an altercation.

United manager Benitez felt Gamez, signed from Atletico Madrid this summer, should have showed “more control”, despite his unhappiness at Miric’s challenge in front of the club’s travelling fans.

“They lost their temper – both,” said Benitez.

“In these kind of games, you have to have more control. For both players, I think it was a mistake.”

Gamez will have to sit out tomorrow night’s friendly against Southend United at Roots Hall under Football Association guidelines, and it is unlikely he will face any further punishment.

Former United captain Fabricio Coloccini escaped a ban for his dismissal against Pacos de Ferreira three years ago.

Coloccini had been sent off after grabbing goalscorer Rui Caetano by the throat.

Meanwhile, Benitez has “happy” with his team’s performance against Lokeren.

Ayoze Perez netted twice, and Daryl Janmaat and Jonjo Shelvey also found the net, but Benitez still feels there is room for improvement.

“I’m happy, because always when your team wins, it’s good,” said Benitez.

“We scored four goals and kept a clean sheet, but still we are at the beginning of the pre-season.

“There is plenty of room for improvement. I’m happy, but still we need to give more.

“I have seen an improvement in some things, but still I would like a bit more.

“We are trying to improve the squad. We have to give them some minutes. We have two more games, so we will continue to give them minutes.”
