Rafa Benitez says he wants to keep Jamaal Lascelles at Newcastle United for a “long, long time”.

West Ham United have been linked with a £25million bid for the defender, who is under contract at the club until 2023.

However, manager Benitez says the 24-year-old – who led Newcastle to a 10th-placed finish in the Premier League last season – is not for sale.

“For sure, we want Jamaal,” said Benitez.

“He’s a key player for us. He was a key player last year and he can be a key player for Newcastle United in a long, long time in the future.

“The reality is that we don’t want to sell Jamaal. He’s a key player for us, and the captain and a leader.”

Chelsea, Everton and Liverpool have also been linked with Lascelles, signed in 2014 from Nottingham Forest.
