Newcastle United writer Miles Starforth held a Q&A today and talked transfers, Fabricio Coloccini’s ‘strange’ situation and who should line-up in the centre of defence in the first game of the season.

Miles has followed Newcastle to USA this summer and seen them in action against Sheffield United and Doncaster on his return.

But it was Newcastle’s defensive situation and potential signings that dominated the web chat, from Chancel Mbemba and Florian Thauvin to Charlie Austin and Joel Matip.

You can recap the whole Q&A here, but the highlights are below:

Q: When will the next senior player be signed? Also have we got other options if we don’t sign Thauvin?

A: Don’t think there’s an imminent defensive signing, but there is a pressing need to get at least one player in next week. Club retains an interest in Thauvin, but no second bid as yet. Not sure where they’ll turn otherwise.

Q: Any idea on whether we’re still pursuing Matip or the Monaco CB?

A: There’s an interest in Matip, but no movement as yet. Think the Coloccini situation is complicating things.

Q: Do #nufc need to get Colo off the wage bill before spending anymore money this summer?

A: Not sure it’s purely a case of getting him off the wage bill, though that will be a factor. Does he still want to play for the club? That’s the first question. Strange situation.

Q: Why have we not sold Williamson?

A: There’s every chance Williamson will play against Southampton if Coloccini is not fit and the club hasn’t signed another defender. That’s why.

Q: Surely Mbemba will have to be thrown in at the deepend against S’hampton, fav to partner him Taylor?

A: Is that wise if he hasn’t even played one game with his new club? It would be a huge ask for him seeing he’s never played in the PL. The pace of the PL is very different to that in Belgium. It’s not impossible for him to play in the opener, but surely it’s best he has a chance to adjust to new club and style of football? If a CB makes a mistake, it invariably leads to a goal. Needs easing into the PL.

A: What do u think are the chances of NUFC bringin in more players out 10 (10 - certainty) and if so how many?

Q: Think there’s a 9.5/10 chance of more players. As to how many, at least two excluding Northampton striker Ivan Toney, who was at the club today.

Q: What’s the situation with Charlie Austin?

A: Don’t think much has changed. NUFC won’t pay £15m, and doubt the other clubs interested in him will pay that either. Think it could drag on a bit longer.

Q: Any thoughts on whether Gouffran is seen by McClaren as an important squad player or will he sell?

A: Think McClaren’s got a decision to make on the fringe players, and Gouffran, quite possibly, now falls into that category. Don’t think he’s as important now as he was under Pardew.
