The eccentric Frenchman has enjoyed a fine start to life on Tyneside, with his explosive performances already prompting fears over his long-term future.

A number of clubs were believed to be interested in his services over the summer, but Saint-Maximin himself insists he is happy to remain at St James’s Park – provided the club continue to strengthen in coming summers.

In a wide-ranging interview with BBC Newcastle, the wideman has revealed how Steve Bruce promised him that the club will ‘buy players every year’ – suggesting that Mike Ashley has given the green light for continued investment in the Magpies.

And that was music to the ears of Saint-Maximin, even if he’s struggling to deal with the North East weather.

"If Newcastle can be a great club, I can stay - no problem,” said the 22-year-old.

“I want to do everything for Newcastle.

"Steve [Bruce] said to me the club will do great things and the team will do much better and buy players every year.

"I think this is good. If they stay like this I don't have to move because I feel good even if it is really cold!

"It's really good in your head when you are somewhere and you know you can be bigger."

As well as Bruce, Steve Agnew has been a key figure in Saint-Maximin’s early months in England.

The ex-Sunderland man, now part of the club’s backroom staff, has been hailed by the winger himself – who admitted he is keen to repay his faith in the coming weeks.

“Steve Agnew helped me a lot,” admitted Saint-Maximin.

“He showed me a lot of things so I can be the best player to help Newcastle.

"When you have people believe in you, you think okay I can do that, I don't want to disappoint.

"I want to do a great job so he can be happy."
