Fabricio Coloccini is struggling with an Achilles problem, according to Steve McClaren.

Newcastle United’s captain sat out the club’s first two pre-season games.

He’s got a little Achilles problem, and we didn’t want to take a risk.

And head coach McClaren is hoping to have the 33-year-old available for Saturday’s game against Sacramento Republic in California.

Asked if any of those night involved against Club Atlas last night would feature at Bonney Field, McClaren said: “We’re hoping Colo.

“He’s got a little Achilles problem, and we didn’t want to take a risk.

“I expect to go with the same group.”

Former Newcastle manager Alan Pardew, now in charge of Crystal Palace, has been linked with a move for long-serving Coloccini, whose captaincy came under scrutiny during last season’s relegation battle.

Midfielder Jack Colback has skippered the team in his absence this pre-season.

And McClaren admitted the captaincy was an “issue” this week, though he insisted Coloccini was still the club’s skipper.

Meanwhile, Steven Taylor, Emmanuel Riviere and Curtis Good also sat out the Club Atlas match, played at Milwaukee’s Miller Park.
