Rob Elliot 'doubtful' for Newcastle's game against Arsenal – after being sent home

Steve McClaren is sweating on the availability of Rob Elliot for Newcastle's visit to the Emirates Stadium.

The in-form goalkeeper was unable to play in Monday's 1-0 defeat to West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns because of illness.

Karl Darlow instead made his Premier League debut for McClaren's relegation-threatened side.

And Elliot – who has been outstanding in recent weeks – was sent home today after he again complained that he felt unwell.

Head coach McClaren said: “He was sent home again today, but we are hoping in the next couple of days he gets over it and he is fit for Saturday.

“It's just a family bug, stomach, so he's not feeling too good."

Darlow is on standby to play against Arsenal on Saturday should Elliot fail to recover in time.
