Rob Elliot’s ready for the “toughest” game of his Newcastle United career.

The goalkeeper will be between the posts for tomorrow’s Wear-Tyne derby against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light with Tim Krul injured.

Elliot played in last weekend’s timely 6-2 win over Norwich.

And he: “You could argue that the derby has sort of swayed in Sunderland’s favour in terms of form, manager changes and stuff like that, so it’s nice to go in with a bit of confidence.

“But we’re not getting ahead of ourselves. It’s going to be a tough game, so we need to make sure we keep improving.

“We want to win the derby. We want to do the fans proud.”

Elliot, 29, has never played in a derby at the Stadium of Light.

He added: “It’ll be a new experience for me. It will be good. It’s just about keeping that togetherness as a team when we go there.”
