Massadio Haidara saw red in Newcastle United’s 1-0 win over Californian side Sacramento Republic.

Haidara was sent off for a high tackle on Danny Barrera at a sold-out Bonney Field tonight.

The game, decided by an own goal, also saw Georginio Wijnaldum make his debut and Steven Taylor return from long-term injury.

Head coach Steve McClaren was again without captain Fabricio Coloccini, who had been struggled with an Achilles problem.

Curtis Good and Adam Armstrong also sat out the match, the second of the club’s three-game USA tour.

After the national anthems, an anti-Mike Ashley banner, reading “Mike Ashley sold our soul”, was unfurled by Newcastle fans behind Tim Krul’s goal.

It was not confiscated by stewards, and the supporters were allowed to hang it at the front of the stand.

Sacramento made the better start, but they didn’t trouble Krul, and United midfielder Moussa Sissoko should have done better with a shot from a Gabriel Obertan cross in the ninth minute.

An effort from Daryl Janmaat two minutes later struck a defender and rebounded to home goalkeeper Patrick McLain.

Goalkeeper Krul tipped a Rodrigo Lopez free-kick over the bar in the 33rd minute and stopped a close-range effort from Thomas Stewart later in the half.

Sacramento kept on pressing, and Krul did well to turn a Max Alvarez free-kick round the post before the break.

Newcastle’s breakthrough came early in the second half.

Haidara broke up the left and his cross was inadvertently hammered into the net by Sacramento’s James Kiffe.

Berrera tested substitute goalkeeper Freddie Woodman with a long-range effort in the 54th minute.

Haidara was shown a red card in the 65th minute for a high tackle on Barrera. After a long delay, play was restarted, and McClaren soon brought on Georginio Wijnaldum for his debut.

Ayoze Perez and Rolando Aarons were also thrown on.

Aarons burst into the box in the 80th minute and pulled the ball back for Perez, but the forward couldn’t make the chance count.
