Rafa Benitez isn't getting the best out of Aleksandar Mitrovic at Newcastle United, according to Serbia's coach.

The striker will lead the line for his country against the Republic of Ireland tonight.

Mitrovic – who netted against Moldova last week – has a phenomenal scoring record for Serbia.

However, Mitrovic has had less success at Newcastle under Benitez, who used him sparingly in the Championship last season.

Asked about Mitrovic, Serbia coach Slavoljub Muslin said: "Maybe the system we play with three attackers suits him better.

"Perhaps the coach in Newcastle doesn’t have as much confidence in him as I do. He is our first centre-forward. Perhaps he feels more comfortable playing for the national team than he does for his own club."

Mitrovic's appearance against Ireland will be his last until October.

The 22-year-old has been banned for three games after admitting a Football Association charge of violent conduct.

Mitrovic was caught on camera elbowing Manuel Lanzini Newcastle's 3-0 win Premier League over West Ham United last month.

The former Anderlecht player, signed two years ago, spoke about his future after the game.

Mitrovic said: "I have unfinished business in the Premier League. I have a mission to show people in England, and I will show them."
