Siem de Jong has said a "sad" farewell to Newcastle United.
The forward today re-signed for former club Ajax.
De Jong signed for Newcastle in the summer of 2014, but spent last season on loan at PSV Eindhoven after two injury-hit years at the club.
The 28-year-old, having put his injury problems behind him, had hoped to finally prove himself at Newcastle this season.
However, he was made available for transfer by manager Rafa Benitez.
De Jong issued a candid farewell message to United fans on social media site Instagram after completing his move to Ajax.
The Holland international said: "I am leaving @nufc with a sad feeling. I don't regret my time here, but by my own doing and some unlucky events I didn't perform the way this club deserves.
"I wish you all the best this season and will keep following the club. #howaythelads."
De Jong has signed a three-year deal at Ajax.
