Siem de Jong says Newcastle United’s players are “ashamed” of the club’s 5-1 defeat at Crystal Palace.
The result saw Newcastle drop into the Premier League’s relegation zone ahead of Sunday’s home game against in-form Liverpool.
Head coach Steve McClaren called his player in for extra training on Sunday in the wake of the weekend’s loss at Selhurst Park.
“Everybody knows that we need to work hard to get out of this,” said de Jong, who came off the bench against Palace.
“We came in on Sunday to get a quick talk and recovery for the guys who didn’t play, to do a good session, so everybody was ready to train today and focus on the next game.
“Of course, everybody knows it should be better, and we are all ashamed and really disappointed about the result.
“Heads dropped after the equaliser. It’s a difficult period, and we need to stay in the game. We need to stay focused and not let these things happen again.”
De Jong is pushing for his first league start of the season.
The forward told nufcTV: “I’m finding it difficult to get in the team – I maybe need to get my chance sometimes in the team and help them.”
