SIEM de Jong is set to make his long-awaited comeback for Newcastle United – and put himself in the frame for a first-team return this season.

The forward – who suffered a collapsed lung in February – will play for the Under-21s against Derby County at St James’s Park on Wednesday night

Winger Rolando Aarons – who has been sidelined for the past five months with hamstring and thigh injuries – also has a chance of being involved in the Under-21 Premier League game (7pm kick-off), which has been switched from Whitley Park because of de Jong’s involvement.

It had been feared that de Jong would not play again this season.
