Jonas Gutierrez fears he has kicked his last ball for Newcastle United.

Long-serving Gutierrez scored one goal and set up another in Sunday’s 2-0 win over West Ham United.

I finished my contract, so I take it like that. You never know what can happen, what they (the club) can say.

The result saw the club, which had been in danger of being relegated from the Premier League on the final day of the season, finish a troubled campaign in 15th place.

But the 31-year-old does not expect to be offered a new contract in the summer, when his deal expires.

A number of others players, among them Ryan Taylor and Sammy Ameobi, are also out of contract and expected to leave St James’s Park, where a huge rebuild is needed after years of under-investment.

Gutierrez – who had made an inspirational and emotional playing return in March after being given the all-clear from cancer late last year – is now looking forward to taking a well-earned rest before re-starting his career elsewhere.

Asked if he had played his last game for Newcastle, he said: “I finished my contract, so I take it like that

“You never know what can happen, what they (the club) can say.

“I enjoyed my seven years here. Now I am thinking of my holidays. Then we see what happens.

“It is important to have a holiday, go home and relax.”

Gutierrez experienced the pain of relegation in his first season at St James’s Park, but the 31-year-old helped the club return to the top flight at the first attempt.

The Argentina international has wrote himself into Geordie folklore on his last appearance.

And Gutierrez, signed from Real Mallorca in the summer of 2008, will miss Newcastle, the city and the club’s fans.

“It has been a big part of my life,” said Gutierrez, who has made 205 appearances and scored 12 goals for United.

“When I was younger, I wanted to spend a long time at one club.

“I came here and stayed seven years! Not many players stay that long at one club.

“In my last two years, of course, I have not played that much because of my illness.

“Apart from that, I really enjoyed playing here, and how the fans treat me too. It was an amazing finish to that.”
