Ralph Hasenhuttl claims Southampton were the only team to ‘play football’ at St James’s Park as Newcastle United came from behind to win.

Danny Ings goal put Saints ahead only for United to level through Jonjo Shelvey and win it late on courtesy of Federico Fernandez.

And Hassenhuttl admits he was less than impressed with Steve Bruce’s tactics, Newcastle’s performance and their direct approach when Andy Carroll came on the pitch.

Speaking post-match, he said: “I saw only my team playing football today.

“Sometimes this is a pity. We made a brave away game, we must be proud. The opponent was a little bit struggling - they play long balls to Carroll who everybody knows is 10ft tall."

Carroll transformed the game when he came on for Joelinton in the 58th minute, providing his second assist in a week for Shelvey’s second-half equaliser.
