Willems and Dummett have suffered season-ending injuries. Willems, signed on loan from Eintracht Frankfurt, ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee against Chelsea at the weekend, while Dummett suffered a tendon injury against Wolverhampton Wanderers nine days ago.

And head coach Steve Bruce, concerned that he is short at left-back, says there is money available to sign cover for that position in this month’s transfer window.

“Things change in two or three days,” said Bruce, who is also without right-back Javier Manquillo.

“We have funds available, and we’re active at this moment. Because of what’s just happened, we’re short in that area. We might have to look and see if we can do anything in the short term. We’ll see who’s out there.”
