Steve Bruce confirms contract 'option' at Newcastle United

The defender’s deal expires at the end of the season, and Sky Sports last month reported that there had been no talks on a new contract.

However, Bruce, United’s head coach, has confirmed that the club has an option to extend his deal by another 12 months.

“Feddy has an option for another year, and he’s been terrific,” said Bruce. “We’ll address what we have to do over the next few weeks. If we can get a couple of results quickly, and know where we’re going to be next year, that’ll be better for all concerned.”

Fernandez spoke to the Gazette about his future in December. The 31-year-old said: “Of course, we need to talk in January. We will see what the club think about it. We will sit at the table and see what the options are.”
