The club’s injury-hit head coach came under renewed fire from some fans after successive goalless draws at St James's Park to Norwich City and Oxford.

Newcastle, without a striker following the first-half withdrawal of Joelinton, overcame fourth-round FA Cup opponents Oxford at the second attempt on Tuesday thanks to a 116th-minute goal from Allan Saint-Maximin.

“It was makeshift again,” said Bruce. “We’ve had to try to do something a bit different because of the problems we’ve got. Over the last few weeks, we’ve had criticism – and all the rest of it. If you’re the manager of Newcastle, you’re going to get criticised.
