Steve Bruce in SWOOP for youngster, Rangers eye up out-of-contract Newcastle star

Newcastle United took a considerable step towards Premier League survival last weekend with a vital 2-1 away victory over Burnley.

The Magpies had to come from behind at Turf Moor, but goals from Allan Saint-Maximin and Jacob Murphy were enough to seal the win and move Steve Bruce’s men six points clear of the drop zone.

Speaking after the match, the manager reserved praise for the Frenchman in particular.

He said: “Allan’s missed half a season.

“They [Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson] both had muscle injuries, so I think it made sense [to start them on the bench.

"They made an impact. Probably only Allan can do that. Let’s hope they stay well.

“That’s been the key. I think that was his [Saint-Maximin's] 18th appearance. Our big players haven’t been available. You need your big players. He’s a very talented player, who hasn’t been available for half a season. It’s been a struggle without them.”

“It’s three points towards that magical figure. You’ got to gt to that figure. It [the club’s position] is certainly a lot more healthy today than it was this morning.”

The Toon Army’s next game is against high-flying West Ham.

The Hammers are pushing hard for a Champions League spot this season, and have lost just one of their previous five top flight outings.

Bruce’s men beat them 2-0 on the opening day of the season, however.
