Steve Bruce issues massive Callum Wilson update after losing key Newcastle United player to injury

Wilson, the relegation-threatened club’s 10-goal leading scorer, has been sidelined since February 6 with a hamstring problem.

However, the striker has trained all week – and will be available for Sunday’s Premier League game against Burnley if he comes through the next two days without any problems.

Winger Allan Saint-Maximin – who came off the bench in last weekend’s 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur – could start after training all week.

“Callum will be in the squad,” said United head coach Steve Bruce “Obviously, we’ve still got two days of training. We’ll be training today and tomorrow. But Callum and Allanhave trained all week, so that’s good news for us that they’re available.”

Bruce, already without defender Fabian Schar, will be without captain Jamaal Lascelles, though Federico Fernandez will be available.

“The disappointing thing is that we’ve lost the captain, Lascelles, with a foot injury, which unfortunately happened last week against Spurs,” said Bruce. “That’s a blow for us. With Fab Schar being missing too, it leaves us a bit light there. The rest is as it was.”

Lascelles could be sidelined for the rest of the season.

“Of course, it’s a blow,” said Bruce. “It looked very innocuous, but, unfortunately, the longer the week went on, the worse it got, not better, so he thought it was a knock. He’s probably going to be in a boot for a couple of weeks, and we’ll see after that. I hope it’s not the end of the season, but it could be."

Striker Andy Carroll could return to the squad after missing the Tottenham game with a calf problem, though winger Ryan Fraser (groin) will again be unavailable.

“Carroll’s got a chance, Fraser hasn’t improved at all,” said under-pressure Bruce, who retains the backing of owner Mike Ashley.

On the Burnley game, Bruce said: “We produced a performance last week which was arguably as good as we’ve played all season. We hope we can take it in. We’ve banged the drum on it all week. We’ve got to take it into Burnley.”
