Ritchie, on the fringes of Steve Bruce’s starting XI, is keen to return to former club Bournemouth ahead of today’s deadline.

Asked if the move would happen, head coach Steve Bruce said: "I that’s up in the air. Matt's been a very, very good servant to the club, and is very, very well thought of, so we’ll see. We see that later on with that.

"Matt’s found himself a bit frustrated not playing, not being a regular in the team. I understand that, totally, but he has to understand that if it doesn’t happen, then he get his head down and works until the end of the season.”

A proposed return to Bournemouth broke down last summer over the wages on offer to Ritchie at the Championship club. The 31-year-old, signed in 2016, is under contract at Newcastle until 2023.
