The sight of Schar leaving the pitch clutching the same shoulder was a worrying one for Steve Bruce. However, United's head coach doesn’t believe the injury will necessitate a move into the transfer market before Monday night’s deadline.

"We hope that (Paul) Dummett, (Ciaran) Clark and (Jamaal) Lascelles will be back a week on Monday,” said Bruce. “The injuries we’re picking up are to our centre-backs, though I don’t think I’ll be jumping into the market unless something mouthwatering comes along which appeals to us.

"I’ll not know about Fab Schar until, obviously, we scan him. We hope that he needs a bit of luck there. We hope that he hasn’t disrupted the shoulder where he’s just had surgery.”
