The club has a two-week break after the February 1 game against Norwich City at St James’s Park.

And Bruce doesn’t plan to take his players away for warm weather training during break, a first for the English top flight.

Asked what the club’s plans were for the break, United's head coach said: “Nothing. I’m not going to take them anywhere. They’re going to have a few days off and let their missus look after them.”

Bruce wants Newcastle to book a place in the FA Cup’s fifth round – and beat Norwich – before the break.

“We’ve got two huge games now, arguably the most important part of the season,” said Bruce, whose side take on Oxford United at St James’s Park in a fourth-round tie this afternoon.

“Can we get through to in the FA Cup? And can we beat Norwich? Can we get into the fifth round and can we get 33 points? If we can get to that break, with getting people back fit, then hopefully we’ll be OK.”

Premier League clubs are not allowed to monetise the winter break, which was brought in to give players a rest after the busy festive period, by playing high-profile friendlies.

Rafa Benitez, Bruce’s predecessor, took the club’s players for warm weather training camps in Spain during breaks in the fixture list in his last two seasons in charge of United.
