Vurnon Anita left the field on a stretcher during Newcastle United’s season-opening 2-2 draw against Southampton.

But head coach Steve McClaren is hopeful the midfielder’s injury is not serious.

Anita fell awkwardly at St James’s Park this afternoon.

“He’s walking around,” said McClaren. “We’ll assess that.”

On the game, McClaren said: “I was absolutely delighted. I thought, for 70 or 75 minutes, the team was excellent.”

McClaren, however, admitted he was frustrated at the defending for Southampton’s goals, scored by Graziano Pelle and Shane Long.

Papiss Demba Cisse and debutant Georginio Wijnaldum were on target for Newcastle.
