Steve McClaren feels his Newcastle United team can be spurred against Aston Villa on by supporters with long memories.

McClaren’s 15th-placed side take on the Premier League’s basement club in a televised game at St James’s Park on Saturday teatime.

That was six, seven years ago, but if it still goes on and gets the crowd from the first whistle in a fighting mood, then great.

Villa fans celebrated Newcastle’s relegation at Villa Park in 2009, and head coach McClaren is aware of the ill-feeling that lingers on Tyneside from that fateful day.

Asked about McClaren said: “That was six, seven years ago, but if it still goes on and gets the crowd from the first whistle in a fighting mood, then great.

“(Fans) don’t realise how important they are in terms of the performance of the players, and especially here.

“The crowd are a huge influence.”
