Steve McClaren has admitted he still doesn’t Georginio Wijnaldum’s best position.
Wijnaldum scored four goals in Sunday’s 6-2 Premier League win over Norwich City.
Head coach McClaren started Wijnaldum – whose favoured position is the No 10 role – on the left-hand side of his midfield.
However, McClaren feels Wijanldum – who combined well with Moussa Sissoko on the other flank – could play in any position given his footballing intelligence.
“We don’t quite know what he is,” McClaren told BBC Radio Newcastle.
“That’s the beauty of Gini – you can play him anywhere. He’s got the intelligence to do that.
“We’ve tried him in various situations, but we’re just hanging him on that left-hand side and giving a little bit more freedom.”
“He showed his qualities, his tempo, his finishing.”
