Fabricio Coloccini could be handed a start against Southampton at St James’s Park on Sunday – despite missing all of Newcastle United’s pre-season fixtures.
The club’s captain – who yesterday signed a one-year extension to his contract – has been struggling with an Achilles problem.
But United head coach McClaren has hinted that Coloccini’s lack of match practice won’t stop him being selected for the club’s season opener.
“He’s done the majority of the training – like the rest – but not played the games,” said McClaren
“(It is) another decision that will have to be made on the day, but sometimes the best way to get up to speed and fitness is to play.”
