Steve McClaren says Newcastle United must “break the hoodoo” when they visit the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland have won the last five meetings between the two sides – home and away – and Sam Allardyce’s side are favourites to win on Sunday in the 153rd derby.

Sunderland will be the favourites because of that hoodoo. We’ve got to break the hoodoo.

And Newcastle head coach McClaren said: “Sunderland will be the favourites because of that hoodoo.

“We’ve got to break the hoodoo.”

United beat Norwich City 6-2 at St James’s Park on Sunday.

And the result saw the club off the foot of the Premier League table.

McClaren and his players, buoyed by the performance against result against Norwich, today started preparations for the derby.

“We’ll enjoy this and recover,” McClaren told BBC Radio Newcastle.

“There was a great focus and intensity about them. They got their rewards. We need it again.”

Meanwhile, former Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi is still looking to find a new club – two months into the new season.

Ameobi was not offered a deal by Charlton Athletic after a trial at The Valley.
