Steve McClaren does NOT want Rob Elliot to link up with the Republic of Ireland – as he wants to "wrap him up in cotton wool".
Martin O'Neill is set to name his squad for the Republic's two-legged Euro 2016 play-off against Bosnia.
Elliot – who has been struggling with a thigh problem – was outstanding in yesterday's 1-0 win over Bournemouth.
But McClaren would rather the goalkeeper stayed on Tyneside for treatment ahead of the club's Premier League home game against Leicester City later this month.
Asked if Elliot would link up with Ireland, McClaren said: 'I hope not and I don't think so."
Speaking after the game, Elliot said he would see a specialist to have his injury assessed.
The 29-year-old said: “I’m going to go and see the specialist and hopefully get some good news off him."
