Steve McClaren offered “no excuses” after Newcastle United were dumped out of the Capital One Cup tonight.

A second-string Sheffield Wednesday side won 1-0 at St James’s Park thanks to a 76th-minute goal from Lewis McGugan.

There are no excuses. We are back in in the morning. We have Chelsea on Saturday and we need a fighting mentality.

And head coach McClaren and his players – who face Premier League champions Chelsea at St James’s Park on Saturday evening – were booed at the final whistle.

McClaren said: “There are no excuses.

“We are back in in the morning. We have Chelsea on Saturday and we need a fighting mentality.”

Asked about his team’s ongoing goalscoring problems, McClaren added: “We have got the quality, but we’re not producing it.

“It’s hard to put your finger on but we have to find it.

“It’s a mentality thing. You can go into those games and feel sorry for yourself, but we can’t have that and we can’t make excuses.

“I am not here to criticise individuals. Whatever I say will never be enough to vindicate the performance and the result. The only thing we can do is get in the morning and prepare for Chelsea.”

Wednesday will face Arsenal at Hillsborough in the fourth round of the competition.
