Steve McClaren says he is delighted with Newcastle United’s summer transfer business and is not expecting any more incomings.
But he admits with 10 days of the summer transfer window remaining, he cannot guarantee further signings won’t be added to the squad.
Newcastle have added five new faces with Georginio Wijnaldum, Aleksandar Mitrovic, Chancel Mbemba, Ivan Toney and Florian Thauvin all joining.
They are still short of defensive options, but McClaren has praised the board for their summer recruitment plans.
When asked whether the £50m outlay represented a statement of intent, McClaren said: “Absolutely, without a shadow of doubt.
“After Mike Ashley’s words, I think people were doubting and those doubts were still there at the beginning of pre-season, especially when I first came in.
We are not expecting, we are not chasing anything. We are not trying to make things happen. Usually with 10 days to go, things might happen.Steve McClaren
“There were a lot of doubts and comments that it was all talk, but I think the club have delivered.
“They’ve absolutely delivered 100 per cent with the quality that we’ve got.
“We’re going forward, and that’s what we want to do.
“It might be a while before we actually see that, but we’ve certainly got the players now and the squad has improved.
“Getting some new players was important, but after last season, you need that little injection of belief.
“The new players have brought that, and I’m absolutely delighted.
“I’m sure all the supporters are also delighted that the club have followed up on their words.”
When pressed on whether he would be happy if no further signings were made, McClaren added: “I don’t think any manager is ever entirely happy.
“But I’m happy with what we’ve got to work with.
“There comes a point where we just have to sit down and stop and say, ‘You know what, this is what we have, and now we have to work and develop them, and try to make them into a team that is hard to beat and no one wants to play against’.
“We are not expecting, we are not chasing anything. We are not trying to make things happen. Usually with 10 days to go, things might happen.
“But at the moment, we are delighted with what we have got and let’s get to work with them.”
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, McClaren also denied there was any interest in signing Sheffield United forward Che Adams.
Siem De Jong has recovered from a shin injury, but McClaren says a decision on Moussa Sissoko will be taken tomorrow.
