Steve McClaren has opened talks with Wolfsburg striker Bas Dost over a move to Newcastle United, according to reports in Holland.
Netherlands international Dost looks set to leave the German side this summer, after bagging 20 goals including a strike in the DFB Cup Final.
Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad report that the 26-year-old is a target for Newcastle, and that he has already held preliminary talks with McClaren.
Dost is known to the Magpies chief from his time as FC Twente manager, when the striker was playing in the Eredivisie with Heracles Almelo.
He then moved to Herenveen, where he finished as the league’s top scorer in 2012 with 32 goals, prompting a move to McClaren’s old club Wolfsburg.
Newcastle are in the market for two forwards this summer, with QPR’s Charlie Austin their man target.
