Newcastle United head coach Steve McClaren is targeting a run in the FA Cup – but he admits the club have got a "tough" draw.

McClaren's side will take on Watford at Vicarage Road in the third round of the competition next month.

"Away from home against a Premier League team – it's a tough draw," said McClaren.

"We're playing a good team who are strong at home, and we'll have to be at our very best to win.

"But that's a long way off and there will be a lot of water under the bridge before then.

"Come the second weekend of January, we'll be ready."

Newcastle were knocked out of the competition at the third-round stage last season by Leicester City.

The defeat led to an angry backlash from fans unhappy that then-head coach John Carver had made seven changes for the game.

Watford beat United 2-1 in a Premier League game at St James's Park earlier this season.
